Hello, Hyperself.
Let's redesign our lives.
This is Subehito.
Becoming a Father in My Fifties
So, at the beginning of 2025,
in my early fifties, I became a father for the first time.
You know what?
I actually trembled.
My newborn son is
just incredibly adorable.
Day by day, he becomes more precious to me.
The feeling of "I have to protect this child"
grows stronger and stronger.
I Need to Redesign My Life
On the other hand, another thought welled up inside me:
"I have to properly redesign my life right now."
How should I put it... up until now,
I feel like I've just been drifting along,
going with the flow.
And now, I sometimes think,
"Is this all my life amounts to?"
There's a mix of resignation and maybe a bit of regret.
But you know, when you have a kid in your fifties,
you can't say things like that anymore.
When he's 10, I'll be in my sixties.
When he's 20, I'll be in my seventies.
I'll practically be a grandpa! (laughs)
Then, the remaining time in my life
suddenly felt very real.
"This isn't going to work."
I felt an urgent need to redesign myself,
to redesign my life.
But how?
Encountering the Career Consultant Certification
Right around that time,
by pure chance, I learned about a certification called
"Career Consultant."
A senior executive from a client company
happened to recommend it to me, saying such a qualification existed.
I felt like it was something I needed right now,
and if up to 80% of the cost could be subsidized,
maybe it's a good idea!?
So, I took the plunge and decided to take the course.
To be honest, at first, I thought,
"It's just a qualification to give job-hunting advice, right?
Like teaching people how to write a resume?"
Career Means Your Entire Life
But when I opened the textbook they sent me,
right near the beginning, it said this:
"A career is not just about your job;
it's about your entire life,
including your purpose in life and finding meaning in your work."
As I kept flipping through the pages...
There was a section titled "Developmental Theories,"
explaining how the human mind changes as we age.
One scholar argued that around age 50—right where I am—
is a time to review how you've lived so far
and build a foundation for a more satisfying life.
Another scholar defined the challenge to overcome
for people around this age as
"nurturing the next generation."
I got goosebumps reading that.
I thought, "This is exactly what I'm going through right now!"
How people live their lives.
Why they worry.
Where they get stuck in life,
and how they break out of it.
All of that is written right there,
in the language of psychology and career theory.
That's why I decided
to study this seriously.
Trying Out a Podcast
And you know what?
I thought, what if I broadcast everything I learn
as a podcast?
And that's what this show is.
While I'm redesigning my own life,
I'll just be speaking out loud about
the things I'm learning.
So, that's it for today.
This was Subehito. See you next time.
